What To Read On Vacation

In our busy lives, even if we love to read, there isn’t always enough time in the day to pick up a book and enjoy literature, but on vacation, there’s more than enough time in the day to relax over a margarita on the beach with a book while you work on your tan.

The question then becomes what book should you pack in your suitcase to have on hand to read on your next vacation?  Here are a few ideas that will get any reader inspired when packing the ever important book to take to the beach or on the plane to your next great adventure.

Looking For A Laugh?

For all you lighthearted people out there, your vacation book should keep the laughter cracking out of your lips the whole way through.  Books that keep you smiling or crying because you’ve been laughing so hard are the kind of books that you like to keep around.  You friends will be jealous and you’ll develop stitches in your sides.  Never fear, those stitches can be cured by a little bit of sunshine, so you’ll be okay.

Check out these books for the laugh factor while on vacation:  Bill Bryson’s A Walk in the Woods, American Gods by Neil Gaiman, Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett or The Princess Bride by William Goldman will keep you laughing long after you read the last page.

The Non-Fiction Bandwagon

Reading on vacation doesn’t have to be a work of fiction.  Memoirs, non-fiction books and biographies are a great way to get a little education while you enjoy your time off.  It doesn’t matter that you prefer to read about something that actually happened rather than immersing yourself in a fictional world on your vacation, there are millions of great picks.  The only problem with being a non-fiction aficionado is that you’ll have to do your shopping before you go on vacation.  While the airport is full of fiction to enjoy on the plane, there is very little non-fiction available.  Depending on where you’re travelling, it’s unlikely there will be a better selection overseas or down south.

Vacation friendly non-fiction:  Bring along that massive biography you’ve been waiting for uninterrupted time to read or try anything that catches your fancy on the best seller wall at your local bookstore.

A Book On Tape

I remember the book on tape as an old story, a classic read by some stuffy dude with a British accent.  Now the book on tape, or the audiobook, has changed significantly.  If you don’t want to carry around a book or you want to be able to really relax with your eyes closed and your hands at your sides, you can plug your earphones in and enjoy an audio literary experience.

You can find anything in audiobook format.  Some novels have been dramatized by a cast while others are read by the author, which is almost always a treat.  You can subscribe to a service like audible.com where you pay a membership fee for a certain number of audiobooks per year or you can visit podiobook.com where writers have self published their books for your listening pleasure.

While audiobooks can get pricey if you develop an addiction and podiobook can, at times, be a big waste of time, there are gems in both formats.

Try a new release by your favourite authors over at audible.com or the Heaven series by renowned podcaster, Mur Lafferty.

Something From The Airport Lounge

If you’re a leave-it-to-chance kind of person, picking up your vacation read while you’re waiting for the plane to take off for the beaches of Mexico is a great way to go.  It’ll give you something to do while you wait for your vacation to begin and it will guarantee you a breezy read by a bestselling author.

The airport lounge stores are filled with best sellers, beach reads and thrillers to get the blood pumping.  These books will take you to another place, a sort of escape from real life.  Look for whatever catches your eye and pack it along in your suitcase.

How about Janet Evanovich’s newest novel?  Or something by the horror master Stephen King?

What To Read?

Any of these picks will keep you entertained on the long plane ride across the ocean or give you a great escape from the everyday while you enjoy a little of that Caribbean sunshine!  Happy reading on vacation!
