When you want a slower trip, something that doesn't involve flying across the country, jetlag and the stale smell of the cabin, think about taking the train. In Canada, Via Rail offers many trips, from one coast to the other, each one focussing on a particular aspect of the breathtaking Canadian landscape.
Winnipeg to Churchill
The Hudson Bay Train
If you want a completely different experience, visit northern Manitoba via Winnipeg. The train will take you over 1,700 kilometres, most of which can't be accessed except by train (or a rented plane). This is a long trip, so it's worth it to upgrade to sleeper class so you have a bed to sleep on. When travelling by train, the option of a sleeper is more expensive, but it's highly worth it for long trips like these.
The best time to visit Churchill if you're looking to see polar bears is October and November. If you're interested in bird watching, visit during the months of May, June or July. Beluga whales congregate in Hudson Bay during the high summer months of July and August. If it's the stars that get you going, you can view the Northern Lights from February to April. Churchill really does have something for everyone, all the time!
Toronto to Vancouver via Jasper
The Canadian
This is a three-day journey across half of Canada. Experience Ontario, the Prairies, the Rocky Mountains and beautiful British Columbia. While it takes far longer to get to Vancouver by train than by plane, imagine all the things you'll see. This is an experience every Canadian needs to have. Whether you're travelling with your kids, with your spouse or with your friends, you'll enjoy everything Canada has to offer through the windows of your train.
It's easy to take side trips, if you've got the time. Try taking the train from Jasper to Prince Rupert. Or on your way home, take a trip up to Churchill.
Montreal to Gaspé
The Chaleur
This has to be among my favourite train experiences: travelling along the St. Lawrence to the Gaspé Peninsula, this route offers spectacular sights. This trip is also one of the more affordable ways to introduce yourself to train travel. A comfort class one-way ticket is under $100. You'll spend almost 16 hours on the train, so pack snacks or plan to take a trip to the dinning car (if available).
The Canrailpass
Europe has had train passes for ages, making it easier for budget travellers, myself included, to see more and stay longer. Via Rail's Canrailpass allows 12 days of travel during a one-month period. This means you can spend the entire month travelling from one side of Canada to the other for one fixed rate. So you can travel as much as you want or as little as you want. The Canrailpass is perfect for both, people who have their entire itinerary planned and those who want to take it day by day.
The 2008 rates are $837 for adults and $753 for students, seniors and children during the peak period (June 1 to October 15). Passes are significantly cheaper during the off-peak season, $523 and $471, respectively.
The North American Rail Pass
This is the pass to end all rail passes. If your trip involves a foray into the USA, this is the pass for you. While it's pricier than the Canrailpass, it's well worth the extra money for the experience. Use the Via Rail and Amtrak network for 30 days of unlimited travel. That means you can see anything you want; visit California, spend a few days in San Francisco or head down to Miami, after you've exhausted the Canadian possibilities!
The 2008 rates are $1,149 for adults and $1,034 for students, seniors and children during the peak period (June 1 to October 15). During the off-peak season they are $675 and $608, respectively.
Choo choo!
While Canada's rail system still isn't as popular as European trains for long distance travel, the train is one of the best ways to really experience the landscape and the country. Get off in a small town only served by train or visit many different cities for less than the price of one plane ticket! With options including sleeper class, comfort class or economy class, every traveller can find the right fare and the right trip on the train. All aboard!
